The game of polo places specific demands on horses and their riders. Even though it is possible to train several breeds to play this game, there is a horse that is in a class of its own.
The best horses for polo are a cross between the ArgentinianCriollo andEnglish Thoroughbred with aheight of 150 cm at the withers. These horses are called polo ponies, though they are not registered as a separate breed.
A horse used for polo must be very fast and dexterous. The demands that are placed on them are truly great. Hundreds of foals are born each year at Argentinian farms. Only 5–10% of these pass the exacting tests and have characteristics that are truly suitable for polo.
